Tim Niemeier - Portrait

Who I Am

Tim Niemeier

I'm a repeat founder and tech leader with over a decade of hands-on engineering and executive experience. I've founded and scaled multiple ventures: Minodes (acquired by Telefonica), Tirendo (sold to Delticom), and ROQ Technology. I've delivered large-scale digital transformations for enterprises like Swisscom, METRO AG, Bosch Rexroth, and TAKKT AG. Several of the platforms I built or led generate mid-hundreds of millions of euros in annual revenue.

As CTO of Rocket Internet and Global Founders Capital, I reported directly to Oliver Samwer, led technology due diligence, and supported portfolio companies on technical strategy. Before that, I spent six years as an independent Interim CTO and CPO, steering product launches from MVP to scale, running global rollouts across four continents, and building systems that handle prime-time TV traffic.

Today, I work as a fractional CTO and CPO. I bring a deep, practical understanding of how AI-assisted coding and product development are reshaping the way we build software. I help organizations transform their workflows, team structures, and development culture to fully leverage what AI makes possible.

Based in Berlin. Available globally.

What I Do

Fractional CTO & CPO

Step into your leadership team part-time or on a project basis. I bring strategic direction, technical decision-making, and hands-on guidance, focusing on what your company actually needs right now.

AI Transformation

AI-assisted coding is not just about faster output. It requires rethinking how teams are structured, how products are scoped, and how engineering culture evolves. It also needs to account for systems architecture and technology choices: fragmented systems and sprawling stacks make it much harder to realize the full gains from AI. I guide organizations through this shift: from tool selection and workflow integration to architecture decisions, upskilling teams, and redesigning development processes for an AI-native world.

Project Leadership

Steering complex e-commerce builds, replatforming initiatives, and marketplace transformations from strategy through delivery. I take ownership of outcomes, not just plans.

Tech Due Diligence

Technical assessments for M&A and investment decisions, covering architecture, code quality, team capability, scalability risks, and technical debt. For transactions from €10M to €1B+.

Technology Assessment

Independent evaluation of your tech stack, architecture, and engineering organization. Honest answers about what works, what doesn't, and what to do about it.

Project Rescue

When a critical initiative is off track, I step in to diagnose root causes, stabilize delivery, and get things moving again. No politics, just solutions.

Team Building

Designing and assembling high-performing engineering teams. From hiring strategies and org design to engineering culture and the leadership structures that make great teams sustainable.

How I Work

Tim in conversation with colleagues
1

Assess

A focused deep-dive into your technology, product, team, and business context. I identify what's working, what's blocking progress, and where the real leverage points are.

2

Align

Together we define clear objectives, a realistic roadmap, and measurable success criteria. No 80-page strategy decks, just shared clarity on what needs to happen and why.

3

Execute

Hands-on leadership until the mission is accomplished. I work alongside your team, make decisions, remove blockers, and stay accountable for results.

The Future of Building Software

Tim at VCH event presenting on AI

The way software gets built is changing fundamentally. AI-assisted coding tools are already accelerating individual developers, but the real gains come from rethinking your entire approach to product development — including systems architecture and technology choices. Fragmented systems and sprawling stacks make it much harder to realize the full gains from AI; a coherent architecture is a prerequisite for the biggest wins.

I help organizations navigate this transformation:

  • Tool and Workflow Integration. Selecting and embedding the right AI coding tools into your existing development workflows.
  • Team Structure and Roles. Redesigning engineering teams and roles for a world where AI handles routine implementation.
  • Process Redesign. Adapting sprint planning, code review, QA, and deployment processes to AI-augmented workflows.
  • Upskilling and Culture. Training teams to work effectively with AI tools and building a culture that embraces continuous adaptation.
  • Product Strategy. Leveraging AI-assisted development to ship faster, experiment more, and fundamentally rethink what's feasible with your resources.
